MATERIALS & FINISHES STANDARD
Controlled materials. Controlled interfaces. Predictable performance.
Infinity Skies products are manufactured under a strict, evolving Materials & Finishes Standard designed to ensure mechanical compatibility, repeatability, corrosion resistance, and long-term platform stability across all modular components.
If it bolts into the Infinity Skies platform, it complies with this standard.
1. Scope & Applicability
Document Reference: IS-MFS-001
Applies To:
- All modular plates, blocks, frames, and assemblies
- All private-label Infinity Skies hardware
- All prototype, production, and program hardware
Exclusions:
- Commodity fasteners (purchased)
- Non-structural cosmetic components
- Customer-supplied parts (unless explicitly certified)
This standard applies regardless of manufacturing location, supplier, production volume, or end use.
2. Design Philosophy
Infinity Skies does not optimize for lowest material cost. We optimize for platform compatibility, manufacturability at scale, predictable mechanical behavior, long service life, and global supply resilience.
Materials and finishes are deliberately constrained to protect the integrity of the Unified Modular Platform.
3. Approved Materials
3.1 Aluminum Alloys (Primary Platform Material)
| Alloy | Condition | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| 6061-T6 | Standard | Default for all plates, blocks, fixtures |
| 7075-T6 | Controlled | High-load adapters, thin sections |
| MIC-6 | As-received | Fixture bases, flatness-critical plates |
Aluminum is the default platform material. All hole patterns, grids, and datums are qualified around aluminum behavior. Material substitutions require engineering approval.
3.2 Steel (Secondary / Structural)
| Material | Usage |
|---|---|
| A36 / Mild Steel | Welded frames, skids |
| 1018 / 1020 | Machined steel blocks |
| 4140 Pre-Hard | Wear surfaces, load-bearing adapters |
- Steel is never used to define primary interface geometry
- All steel frames interface through machined aluminum plates
- Welds never control alignment or datum position
3.3 Stainless Steel (Selective)
| Grade | Usage |
|---|---|
| 303 / 304 | Corrosion-resistant adapters |
| 17-4 PH | High-strength precision components |
4. Surface Finishes (Primary)
4.1 Anodizing (Default Finish)
| Type | Color | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Type II | Clear | Neutral structural components |
| Type II | Blue | Datum / alignment / reference |
| Type II | Yellow | Adjustable / motion elements |
| Type III | Black | High-wear interfaces |
Color encodes function, not aesthetics. All anodizing thickness is accounted for in design.
4.2 Non-Anodized Finishes
| Finish | Usage |
|---|---|
| As-Machined | Prototype / reference |
| Bead Blasted | Cosmetic uniformity |
| Black Oxide | Steel components |
