Client: Precision machining / inspection
Industry: Aerospace / Foundry
Service: Modular Fixture Design & Build (UMMS)
Problem
Worked with a casting machining client. They were running 1-off dedicated fixtures for production and inspection for each part number. Each new job or changes in inspection requirement led to a new design, new material, and a lead-time. When programs ends, fixtures are returned to customer or left unused with no reuse path, no resale value, taking up shelf space.
Solution
Infinity Skies Corp built the shops first fixture on the UMMS grid: a fixed 1.000″ pattern with a shared Datum A/B/C reference. New attachments locate directly to the existing base with no redesign or rebuild.
The client added inspection and machining attachments onto that base fixture extending its function without touching the core use.
Implementation
We now have a pending a second modular fixture in design for a new project. Our approach is to convert one application at a time, verify performance for future fixtures, then displace the next legacy fixtures as they need repair.
Why UMMS
- Reuse: Shared datum and grid to move components between jobs instead of sitting in an unused fixture whose program ended.
- No lead-time on stock components: New configurations are assembled, not fabricated. These can be deployed in hours, not weeks.
- In-stock components: as demand builds, components and kits will be manufactured and stocked to shipped same-day
- Material Modification: Attachments start from modified COTS blanks. Only the feature face gets machined.
Results
One fixture became a platform. This casting machining customer is expanding project by project, replacing single-use tooling with a reconfigurable system that gets faster and cheaper to deploy with each addition.
